Coventry City have reached a full agreement on personal terms with David Sousa, the highly-rated Brazilian central defender currently playing for Belgian side RWD Molenbeek. The move comes after weeks of negotiations, with Coventry beating off strong competition from several Championship rivals including Derby County, Middlesbrough, QPR, and Swansea City.

Sousa, 24, is set to become one of the club’s key defensive reinforcements ahead of the 2025/26 season as Coventry aim to push for promotion to the Premier League. His strong physical presence, aerial ability, and composure on the ball have drawn attention from across Europe, but it was the influence of manager Frank Lampard that ultimately sealed the deal.

“Frank Lampard was decisive,” a source close to the player revealed. “David was impressed by the club’s ambition, the project, and Lampard’s vision for him at the heart of Coventry’s defence.”

Sousa is expected to fly to England in the coming days to undergo a medical and finalize his move, with an official announcement expected shortly after.

The signing is seen as a major coup for Coventry City, who continue to strengthen their squad in a bid to return to top-flight football for the first time since 2001.
